Overview

A global provider of clinical trials and Real World Data services was building a new oncology business capability which would enable biopharma partners to negotiate novel pricing agreements to unlock revenues by expanding access to anti-cancer drugs in Europe.

The Challenge

There was no unified data reference standard for codifying hospital oncology regimens used in Europe; this is essential for effective comparison of aggregated patient-level data to discover meaningful and actionable insights

At hospital level, regimens are expanded into protocols that can be adapted for individual treatment plans, which presents further complexity.

The Approach

Our consultant led design of the algorithm to transform patient-level data into insights about real world regimen use.

After analysing a diverse set of regimens published at national, regional, and hospital levels, he devised a pattern typology to describe regimen characteristics.

Next, he designed and led a workshop with experts from the European Society of Oncology Pharmacy (ESOP) across five countries to blind test their logic against the algorithm using the pattern typology.

The Outcomes

ESOP validated the typology’s utility for curating a master library, and the algorithm for classifying and matching patient treatment reference data to enable meaningful comparison within and across European countries.

ESOP and our consultant co-authored a paper which was published in a European Journal, “Pilot study of a European oncology regimen reference library and matching algorithm”.

Our client successfully used feedback from the workshop to further develop its data platform capabilities.
